Case study: Instant quoting for a custom metal parts manufacturer

An instant quote on their website, as a range from historical jobs, that tightened as more data came in.

01The situation

What quoting looked like

A custom metal parts contract manufacturer was quoting by hand. The rules were complicated. Drawings came in by email. An estimator walked the part through those rules, then sent a number back. Buyers who needed a quote now went elsewhere.

  • Every quote waited on the person who knew the rules.
  • The rules were too involved to dump into a simple calculator and trust.
  • Speed-to-lead was the time to get back to an RFQ, not the time to make the part.
  • The website did not show up when buyers, or AI tools, looked for shops that could quote on the spot.

They needed a quote on the site from the jobs they had already priced, and a site those searches could find.

02What we built

A range from historical jobs, on the website

The tool quotes from past work rather than pretending the full rulebook can be encoded on day one.

  • 01Instant quote as a rangeHistorical jobs, not a fully encoded rulebook, so a buyer gets a range without waiting on email.
  • 02Accuracy that tightenedAs more quotes and wins came in, the range narrowed.
  • 03Single price when confidence roseThe manufacturer could switch from a range to one number once they trusted the tool.
  • 04Findable for quoteable workThe site structured so AI tools can surface them when people search for instant-quote services.

03Results

What the work made possible

  • 01Instant range on the websiteBuyers get a quote without waiting on the estimator, and the range tightens as more data comes in.
  • 02Faster speed-to-leadThe quote is the first response, not a follow-up email.
  • 03More top-of-funnel leadsThe shop shows up when people, and AI tools, search for instant-quotable custom metal work.
  • 04More business than the rare underquote costThe extra work won outweighed the cost of a rare underquote.
